How to Use Your roof top tent Safely
From pre-trip checklists to maintenance on the road — all the tips you need to keep your Koala Creek roof top tent and in good condition for years to come.
Before you leave: check your car and roof racks
A safe trip starts with proper preparation. Before every trip, check that your roof racks are securely fastened and that your vehicle’s maximum roof load limit is not exceeded. Most Koala Creek weigh between 55 and 85 kg—so be sure to check your roof load limit when the tent is loaded.
- Check all the screw connections on your roof racks.
- Make sure the roof top tent is roof top tent mounted on the roof racks.
- Visually inspect the rails and clamps for damage.
- If in doubt, consult the original manual for your roof top tent roof rack.
How to Safely roof top tent
Before using the product for the first time, it is advisable to have it installed by a dealer.
Always use all the included stainless steel mounting plates (4 pieces), sliders (8 pieces), bolts (8 pieces), and self-locking nuts (8 pieces). Using the included ring/ratchet wrench, tighten the nuts securely until the plate flexes slightly.
Driving with a roof top tent: what should you keep in mind?
A roof top tent your car’s roof will affect its handling. Keep the following in mind:
- Increased height — be careful in parking garages and under low clearances.
- Air resistance — fuel consumption is 10–20% higher on the highway.
- Crosswinds — ride a little more carefully in strong winds or on bridges.
- Speed limit — we recommend a speed limit of 120 km/h when using roof top tent.

On long trips, stop every 200 km to check that all fasteners are still secure.
Use your roof top tent
- Always set up the tent on level ground—use our Level-it necessary.
- Climb up and down the ladder carefully; always use three points of contact.
- Take down the tent once it's dry. Never pack it up while it's still wet—that causes mold.
- Clean the canvas with water and a brush; never use harsh chemicals.
